چکیده

We consider a decisionmaker who "narrowly brackets", i.e. evaluates her decisions separately. Generalizing an example by Tversky and Kahneman (1981) we show that if the decisionmaker does not have constant-absolute-risk-averse preferences, there exists a simple pair of independent binary decisions where she will make a …rstorder stochastically dominated combination of choices. We also characterize, as a function of preferences, a lower bound on the monetary cost that can be incurred due to a single mistake of this kind. Empirically, we conduct a real-stakes laboratory 1Rabin: University of California — Berkeley, 549 Evans Hall, Berkeley, CA 94720-3880, USA, [email protected]. In addition, we conduct a representative survey among the general U.S. population that asks for hypothetical large-stakes choices. There we …nd higher proportions of dominated choice combinations. A statistical model suggests that the average preferences are close to prospect-theory preferences and that about 89% of people bracket narrowly. Results do not vary much with the personal characteristics of participants. Narrow Bracketing and Dominated Choices1

An experiment by Tversky and Kahneman (1981) illustrates that people's tendency to evaluate risky decisions separately can lead them to choose combinations of choices that are …rst-order stochastically dominated by other available combinations. We investigate the generality of this e¤ect both theoretically and experimentally. We show that for any decisionmaker who does not have constant-absolut...

BROAD BRACKETING INDUCES UTILITARIAN DECISIONS 1 Broad Bracketing Induces Utilitarian Consumer Decisions

In this digital age, over 2 billion people are making increasingly important financial and health decisions on digital interfaces of computers and mobile devices. Yet we know people fail to have enough self-control to resist temptations time and time again. How can we help people make better decisions in a digital environment? We hypothesize that using broad bracketing to present decisions will...

A portfolio of dilemmas: Experimental evidence on choice bracketing in a mini-trust game

Bracketing is a mental procedure about how people deal with multiple tasks. If a decision maker handles all the tasks at the same time, it is called broad bracketing. If she handles the tasks separately, e.g., one or a few tasks each time, it is called narrow bracketing. This paper experimentally investigates the effect of broad versus narrow bracketing in the context of a mini-trust game. The ...

Goals and bracketing under mental accounting

Behavioral economics struggles to explain why people sometimes evaluate outcomes separately (narrow bracketing of mental accounts) and sometimes jointly (broad bracketing). We develop a theory of endogenous bracketing, where people set goals to tackle self-control problems. Goals induce reference points that make substandard performance painful. Evaluating goals in a broadly bracketed mental ac...

Choice Bracketing and Construal Level Theory: The Effects of Problem Representation and Mental Representation on Sequential Risk-Taking

Two important theories in intertemporal choice are choice bracketing and construal level theory (CLT), but their relationship to each other is unexplored. Broad bracketing (considering many choices in a sequence) may induce a more holistic approach to decisions, suggesting overlap between choice bracketing and CLT. We attempt to integrate the theories and distinguish their effects on risk-takin...
